About

Rachel Schaffnit has served as a general academic advisor with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since November 2021. Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, a fellow Great Lakes city, she has called Chicago home since 2013. Rachel earned her bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 2006 and went on to complete her master's degree at Northeastern Illinois University in 2018. Prior to her career in higher education, Rachel taught English as a second language in South Korea, Turkey, and Chicago, gaining a diverse, global perspective on education.
Outside of her professional work, Rachel enjoys reading, gardening, experimenting with vegetarian cooking, and birdwatching. She also dedicates time to volunteering as a TreeKeeper with Openlands and as a plover monitor with Chicago Piping Plovers.
Rachel was honored with the Outstanding Practitioner Advising Award for the 2023-2024 academic year in recognition of her contributions to academic advising.
