Professor David Merriman Cited in Lincoln Journal-Star Article

David Merriman, professor in the Department of Economics and part of the Institute for Health Research and Policy at UIC, was cited as a tax expert in a Lincoln Journal-Star editorial article entitled “Sorting out the Best Ideas.” The article discusses Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ property reduction plan and the consequences that could result from its implementation.

“What lawmakers must be wary of its unintended consequences, as tax expert David Merriman of the University of Illinois warned at a symposium organized earlier this year by the OpenSky Policy Institute.

One of the drawbacks cited by Merriman is that the caps break the link between observable market value and tax valuations.

Nonetheless, the Ricketts’ proposal to cap the farm and ranch land deserves serious consideration.”
