LAS Student Support Inspires the Next Generation of Leaders

Future biologist, Kaya T., chats with atLAS about meeting her scholarship donors and becoming a 'peer leader'
Interview with Kaya
Name: Kaya T.
Major: Biological Sciences– Molecular, Cellular, and Organismal Biology Concentration
Minor: Chemistry, Nutrition
Year: Junior
How did you choose your major/minor?
During my senior year of high school in Lebanon, I was captivated by the intricacies of genetics and discovered my passion for exploring the reproductive system. The complexity of something as small as cells amazed me. When I came to UIC as an undeclared major, that fascination intensified when I took BIOS 110 during my first semester. With the incredible support of my professor and the depth of knowledge I gained, I knew Molecular Biology was the perfect major for me. I also enjoy chemistry! The challenge of studying what is unseen deepened my interest in minoring in it. I aim to additionally minor in nutrition to better understand metabolism and the impact of diet on our health.
How did you originally get involved with the Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC)?
The connections I built with my TAs and peer leaders during office hours at MSLC, while experiencing their remarkable support, inspired me to join this growing team dedicated to helping students succeed. PHYS 131 was one of my best classes, taught by a kind and supportive professor who recognized my passion for science and witnessed my interest in tutoring and helping others. Appreciating my dedication and high academic performance, he later recommended me as a peer leader for the course—and the rest is history!

Can you talk about your experience becoming a ‘peer leader’ at the MSLC?
In short, MSLC is my home away from home. It’s the place I go to grow beyond my comfort zone and find both support and inspiration. This experience has shaped me in ways I never expected, helping me develop essential communication, leadership and organizational skills that will benefit me on both personal and professional levels. MSLC is a supportive environment that holds more than just academic assistance; it’s a space where I’ve formed lasting friendships and connections with incredible people. Being able to help peers excelling in their academic journey is one of my proudest accomplishments. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, which has opened the door for me to be honored with the “Varma-Nelson Peer Scholars Award,” recognizing exceptional peer leaders and their contributions.
Have there been any support systems that have helped you navigate your college experience?
I wouldn’t have made it to where I am today without the constant support of the people around me, from my amazing parents and sister to my professors and peers. Their encouragement, advice, and unwavering belief in me have been instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and navigate my college experience. Whether it was late-night study sessions with friends, guidance from professors, emotional support from my family, each of these individuals has contributed to my growth and success. Their support has motivated me to reach for goals I once thought were beyond my potential.

You had the opportunity to meet the donors of one of your LAS scholarships and spend an afternoon with them. What was it like to meet them and share how their contributions have supported your education?
Meeting the donors of my LAS scholarships and spending an afternoon with them was an unforgettable experience. I felt truly heard, seen, and appreciated in their presence. It was a moment filled with tears of gratitude, yet a huge smile that remains as a constant reminder of their compassion and immense kindness. Their warmth deeply touched my heart and inspired me to continue working hard, with the goal that one day I can give back to UIC the same generosity I have received from them. Their words of encouragement have made my challenges worth fighting for. I feel incredibly blessed to have experienced this opportunity, which has made me realize that after every struggle and feeling of surrender, there is always a glimpse of hope – one that marks the beginning of something even bigger!
Do you have any advice for new students coming to LAS?
If I had to give advice to upcoming LAS students, I would say: don’t be afraid to build connections and ask questions. You never know what might spark your passion or lead you in a new direction. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you to become the better version of yourself. Embrace your obstacles because “a smooth sea never makes a skilled sailor.” It is crucial to understand that there is no such thing as losing or failing—these are simply opportunities to learn. Therefore, focus on the growth that comes from those challenges. To all new peers, this is your time to explore and try new things, so take full advantage of it, enjoy the ride and don’t limit yourself. Life can be tough sometimes, remember to never give up but stay resilient and optimistic. Be proud of your smallest accomplishments and believe in your potential because good things will unexpectedly come your way!
