Economics Professor Frank Chaloupka Quoted in Newsweek

Dr. Frank Chaloupka, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Economics, was quoted in a January 6, 2016 article in Newsweek entitled “Soda Tax in Mexico Causes Serious Sales Dip in Sugary Drinks.” The article describes how sales taxes on full-calorie sodas have been surprisingly effective, and have even far exceeded what some experts predicted, and what this could mean for future implementation of similar legislation.

“ ‘I think sugary beverage taxes should be an important part of a comprehensive approach to promoting healthier diets and reducing obesity,’ [Chaloupka] says. ‘The experiences in Mexico are demonstrating their effectiveness in altering consumer behavior, which will almost certainly eventually show up’ as a decline in obesity, he adds.”
