Download iCal FileWhat is a revolution? Should we speak of revolution, or revolutions? "Revolution" immediately brings up tensions between the universal and the particular, between tradition and rupture, between the individual and the community, between theory and practice. Join us for two moderated panels and a roundtable as we reflect on these tensions and on what revolution means, and can mean, for our own scholarship and for human emancipation today.
Schedule:
11-12:30 Panel I: Revolutions in Theory (Moderators: Yann Robert and Marina Mogilner)
- Jack Goldstone, George Mason University, “The Evolution of Revolutions—How an Old Dog is learning New Tricks”
- Dan Edelstein, Stanford University, “Revolutions and Historical Thought”
1-2:30 Panel II: Revolutions in Practice (Moderators: Sunil Agnani and Soledad Alvarez Velasco)
- Meryem Belkaid, Bowdoin College, “By the people and for the people. Promises and mirages of the Algerian Revolution ”
- Jean-Daniel Lafontant, Haiti Cultural Services, Miami, "To Live Free or Die, a Marroon Perspective of Vodou in the Haitian Revolution.”
2:45-4:30 Roundtable/Open Discussion with UIC Faculty and Graduate Students
