Joel Brown Featured in USA Today Article About Michigan Black Squirrels
Quotes from Joel Brown, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and co-founder of the website Project Squirrel, appeared in a USA Today article entitled “Black Squirrels in Michigan Popping up in More Places,’ which discusses the prevalence in southeast Michigan of black squirrels, a variety with which many residents are unfamiliar.
“Black squirrels do better in areas where they are safe from predators, said Joel Brown, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago … In urban areas, gray squirrels are slowly taking over from fox squirrels, another common species of squirrels that have orange-colored bellies, he said. That's because urban habitats hold fewer predators than in the past. Cats and dogs, for example, are more likely to be kept indoors, he said.”
