Let the Data Speak for Themselves: A Personal Journey of Variable Selection
Dr. Yichao Wu is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences TransUnion Endowed Professor in Data Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. He earned his BS in Mathematics from Nankai University in China and his MS in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests center around statistical machine learning. In particular, he has made original contributions to variable selection and screening, dimension reduction, multicategory classification, functional
data analysis, and more recently Fréchet analysis of random objects. Dr. Wu’s research has been applied in the areas of biomedical sciences and finance.
Dr. Wu’s research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. In recognition of his academic excellence and his service to the profession, Dr. Wu received the prestigious NSF Early Career Development (CAREER) Award and the Leo Breiman Junior Scholar Award from the American Statistical Association. Additional honors include being named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.
