Talk title: Tales of Access and Excellence in Chemical Education and Learning Sciences
Donald J. Wink is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry, where he served as Head from 2000-2005, and is also an associated faculty member in the Learning Sciences Research Institute. His research training is in organometallic chemistry and single crystal small-molecule crystallography. In addition, he has research programs in curriculum and assessment design and teacher and faculty education in K-12 and higher education. Grant support for current and past projects has come from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Illinois State Board of Education, and Chicago Public Schools, among other sources.
His work with the American Chemical Society includes membership on the Society Committee on Education, the Committee on Chemistry and Public Affairs, and within the Division of Chemical Education, and he is the 2024 recipient of the American Chemical Society’s George Pimentel Award in Chemical Education, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field. He has over 47 publications in chemical education and learning sciences, and is an author on 77 papers in molecular chemistry.
He has been a member of the UIC Senate Executive Committee since 2015 and has served as Presiding Officer, Chair, and Vice-Chair of the Committee. He is a member of the University of Illinois' University Senates Conference and the Discovery Partners Institute Executive Committee. Professor Wink received his BS from the University of Chicago and his PhD from Harvard University.
