Working Memory Hinders Creativity
Jennifer Wiley, a professor in the psychology department, and Andrew Jarosz, a graduate student in the same department, recently published in the August issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science on the role of working memory capacity in both mathematical and creative problem solving.
Evidence from this study combined with several other psychological studies suggests that, while working memory and high focus helps in analytical problems, it can hinder creativity.
