Slavic and Baltic Language Department Receives Grant from Polish Foreign Ministry

The LAS Slavic and Baltic Language Department has received an $80,000 USD grant from the Polish Foreign Ministry for projects connected with Polonia by the Taube Centre in Warsaw. The grant, the second largest of those given, will fund new study programs in 2014 in Poland.

Assistant Professor Karen Underhill, of the Slavic and Baltic language department, authored the winning proposal, which proposes offering college-aged students of Polish and Jewish heritage (2 groups of 20, for a total of 40) in an immersion course in Poland, that opens it up as a place of shared Polish-Jewish history and cultural heritage. The department will be involved in recruiting student participants, both from UIC and nationally, and consulting on the overall curriculum of the courses.
