Schaal Honored With Distinguished Scientist Award
Barbara Schaal, an LAS alumna, was honored by the American Institute of Biological Sciences with the 2011-12 AIBS Distinguished Scientist Award. The Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in the Deaprtment of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis, she is widely recognized for her pioneering research, including molecular biology-based approaches to understanding evolutionary processes in plants. In 2005, she became the first woman elected vice president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a post she still holds, and has served as president of the Society for the Study of Evolution and the Botanical Society of America.
