Professor Maria de los Angeles Torres Guest on NPR History Program

In the latest episode of the nationally syndicated public radio program "BackStory with the American History Guys," Maria de los Angeles Torres, UIC professor of Latin American and Latino studies and executive director of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research, is one of several guests who share their personal stories of leaving their families at a young age to start new lives in America. In the early 1960′s at the age of 6, Torres was one of over 14,000 Cuban minors sent to the U.S. in "Operation Pedro Pan," a U.S.-led rescue for children whose parents opposed the revolutionary government of Fidel Castro.
