Physics Professors Sivananthan and Christoph Attributed for Launch of NASA’s ‘Hitomi’ Spacecraft

Professor Sivalingam Sivananthan and Professor Christop Grein of the LAS Department of Physics made contributions to the launch of the “Astro-H” spacecraft on February 17, 2016 at 5:45pm JPT from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan. The Microphysics Laboratory and EPIR Technologies, Inc. under the guidance of Professor Sivananthan and Grein, and in collaboration with NASA and the Japanese space agency, JAXA, were part of this successful mission by developing HgTe calorimeter tiles with ultralow specific heat. They permit very high energy resolution soft x-ray detection, and are the absorbers of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer System.
