Five UIC Students Awarded Gilman Study Abroad Scholarships, All From LAS
Five University of Illinois at Chicago undergraduates have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman scholarships to study abroad this fall.
TheGilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department to diversify the group of students who study abroad and their destinations.
The UIC students are among more than 850 undergraduates awarded Gilman scholarships. To be eligible for the award, students must demonstrate financial need by receiving a federal Pell Grant for their studies.
Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study-abroad program costs. Since 2006, UIC students have received 85 Gilman scholarships totaling approximately $345,000.
UIC recipients, who all represent the college of liberal arts and sciences, and their destinations include (EDITORS: See list).
The program is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston. The program honors former U.S. Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman of New York, a former chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee.
Gilman Scholarship recipients from UIC:
AURORA – Linda Oceguera, a senior in psychology and criminology, law and justice, St. Petersburg, Russia.
CHICAGO – Mary Catherine Mariano, (Albany Park), a senior in history, Xi’an, China.
SCHAUMBURG – Adrianna Perez, an Honors College junior in psychology, Barcelona, Spain.
WHEATON – Alyson Martin, an Honors College senior in political science and Russian, St. Petersburg, Russia; Sofi Zharkalli, a senior in economics, Shanghai, China.
