Stories from atLAS chats with a first-generation Sociology student on forging connections and launching her career at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Name: Emily T.

Major: Sociology

Year: Senior

What made you decide to study at The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences?

I always knew I wanted to continue studying right after high school. When I applied to UIC, I was unsure about what I wanted to major in. My academic advisor from high school recommended me to study at The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) because of all the opportunities it offers. After looking over the majors they have, I decided to give it a shot and explore my first year, the different courses they offered.

How did you get connected with the Career Development and Internships Office?

In my freshman year, I was eager to write my resume. I stumbled across a flyer that promoted a “Resume Building Workshop”. From there, I met some of the LAS Career Coaches and was able to follow up. I learned about the different resources they offered, such as internship search, mock interviews, and career guidance. As an undeclared major student I believed that this office would be a great resource.

How has your experience being a Peer Leader at the Career Development and Internships Office impacted your time at LAS?

Being a Peer Leader at the Career Development and Internships Office has impacted my time at LAS by allowing me to learn and talk with students with different backgrounds. This experience has allowed me to be more open-minded and has made me realize that there are many things I have to learn from students’ experiences. Being a reserved student, this experience has allowed me to socialize more and start conversations with my peers. Which is a big accomplishment for me, and has motivated me to continue to work on it in the future. This experience has allowed me to take part in a community in LAS and has inspired me to continue to be involved in communities in LAS.

What advice do you have for new students entering the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences?

Being a first-gen student, I felt the pressure of having everything figured out and planned out. As the LAS Career Development and Internships Office says, “Your major does not define your career path.” I would advise new students to be open and search for opportunities; the only way to get to know yourself is through your experiences. I would tell them not to limit themselves; you will never know how far you can go if you do not step out of your comfort zone.

How has studying at LAS helped prepare you for your future goals?

Studying at LAS has helped me prepare for my future goals by encouraging me not to limit myself. It has motivated me to be open to opportunities and not limit myself to one career path.

Do you have any advice for your freshman year self?

A piece of advice I’d give to my freshman self is to have some fun, get involved, and explore. I feel like in my first year, I was so focused on succeeding and my academic work, which is important! But I feel like I did not allow myself to get to know people and take part in communities at UIC earlier. Find that balance.
