Humanities

English professor Peter Coviello sits in front of bookshelf stuffed with books

The humanities touch all aspects of society - from past events and achievements to human behavior and relationships between groups. Students cultivate skills in researching, reading, writing, and critical thinking to address complex and abstract problems. Current humanities courses include Latin American music,  media and professional writing, military history,  languages of the world, African American literature, and medical ethics. LAS students can also enroll in the Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminar and conduct semester-long humanities research in the Newberry’s core collections.

Students who study the humanities cultivate sought-after skills in research, written and verbal communication, and abstract problem-solving.  Well-rounded humanities majors find career opportunities in areas such as public administration, law, journalism, advertising, foreign service, and education/teaching.
