Teresa Cordova Quoted in Chicago Tribune Editorial About Trusting Police

Quotes from Teresa Cordova, LAS professor in the Department of Sociology, were featured in a Chicago Tribune editorial article entitled “When Chicagoans Don’t Trust the Police, the City Suffers.” The article makes the case that a citizenry fully trusting its police officers is “ground zero” for a healthy society, and that if the opposite is the case, fear, anger, and crime rise.

“When people in authority abuse power, trust and connectedness to a community erode. ‘It leads to a breakdown of that which holds society together,’ Teresa Cordova, director of the Great Cities Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago, told us. ‘It's that sense of connectedness that has always been such a powerful part of Chicago neighborhoods.’ "
