Sociology Professor Barbara Risman Examines Adolescents’ Gender Attitudes on the New York Times

Barbara Risman, UIC professor of sociology and LAS distinguished professor, is quoted in a New York Times article examining the results of a new national poll of children and adolescents, ages 10 to 19, about their gender attitudes. “It’s not just girls who get hurt,” said Risman. “I call it boys policing each other to be boyish, particularly when showing emotions or wanting to do something considered feminine, like volleyball or ballet. They have the sense that they can’t stray a bit.”
