Professor Zizi Papacharissi Discusses Facebook CEO’s Testimony with EU on WBEZ’s “Worldview”
Zizi Papacharissi, UIC professor and head of communication and professor of political science, joined WBEZ’s “Worldview” program today to talk about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, his testimony with the European Union, and Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation, which requires more transparency from platforms about data breaches and data collection.
Key points from Papacharissi include:
- No perfect fix to data compromises. The only way to fix the problem is by not collecting data at all
- The EU has a history of exercising a heavier regulatory hand, but whether that will be effective remains to be seen
- Fake news is a form of propaganda, and platforms, but also citizens and politicians must understand why and how they are vulnerable to it.
