Professor Jane Rhodes Interviewed by The New York Times in a Profile of Mary Ann Shadd Cary

The New York Times interviews Jane Rhodes, UIC professor and head of African American studies, in a profile of the late Mary Ann Shadd Cary, who was a writer, educator, lawyer, abolitionist and the first black woman in North America to edit and publish a newspaper. Rhodes is the author of the 1999 book, “Mary Ann Shadd Cary: The Black Press and Protest in the Nineteenth Century.” The article is part of the New York Times weekly obituary series Overlooked, which features obituaries for women and others whose lives were never recalled in the publication. https://nyti.ms/2JicQJs
