LAS Student Named One of Chicago Magazine’s Chicagoans of the Year 2013

Lulú Martinez, a Gender and Women's Studies major, has been named one of Chicago Magazine's Chicagoans of the Year 2013 for her work with the National Immigrant Youth Alliance. Martinez is one of the nine students that made up the Dream 9 group that helped to spearhead anti-deportation protests this summer. Martinez spent 15 days in a federal detention center in Arizona for her participation in the nonviolent protests. After being released, Martinez returned to UIC and continues to organize on behalf of other undocumented students that have been detained.
